I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have taps that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have a tap below or beside the cistern. If you can’t find a valve, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains shutoff valve to cut off all water to your property.

Once you have stopped the diaster from worsening, give our emergency plumber a ring, any time of the day or night. They’ll be there quickly to solve the problem.

While you are waiting, remove any important possessions close to the leak, and wipe up any water or put a container to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Find a length of string of some type, and tie it around the tap aerator so that it hangs down to the bottom of the skink or basin. The drips will run down the string and trickle off quietly.
