I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have taps that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating tap below or beside the cistern. If you can’t locate a tap, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains water shutoff valve to cut off all water to your home.

While you are waiting, remove any important items from the area, and mop up any water or position a bucket to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.
