I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to find the tap to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside your home to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that’s done, give us a call, no matter what the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to get things sorted.

While waiting, clear away any significant items close to the leak, and wipe up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
