I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest access point or at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the water main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give us a call, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you shortly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting, remove any significant possessions close to the leak, and mop up any water or position a container to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps as well.

How can I stop the dripping noise temporarily so I can get some rest?
