I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

Many appliances and fixtures have service valves that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating tap below or beside the cistern. If you cannot find a tap, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains isolating valve to stop all the water to your house.

Once you have stopped the problem from growing, give our emergency plumber a ring, any time of the day or night. They’ll be there rapidly to resolve the problem.

While waiting, remove any significant things close to the leak, and mop up any water or place a bucket to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
