I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating valve below or beside the cistern. If you cannot locate a tap, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains water shutoff valve to cut off all the water to the house.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant items close to the leak, and wipe up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
