I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the water main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the household pipework and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the leak from getting worse, give our emergency plumber a call, any time of the day or night. We’ll be there promptly to solve the issue.

While you wait for our plumber to arrive, begin wiping up any water, position a container to catch drips, and clear away significant possessions from the area. If the property water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
