I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve or at the mains tap outside. If you can’t locate the main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give us a ring, whatever the day or time is. We will be there rapidly to resolve the problem.

While waiting, remove any important things close to the leak, and wipe up any water or place a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
