I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to locate the main valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

While waiting, clear away any important possessions from the area, and mop up any water or place a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.
