I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have service valves that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating valve below or beside the cistern. If you can’t find a valve, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains shutoff tap to stop all the water to your residence.

Once you have stopped the problem from getting worse, give our emergency plumber a call, any hour of the day or night. They’ll be there promptly to resolve the issue.

While waiting, remove any important things close to the leak, and clean up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves as well.
