I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest service valve or at the mains tap outside. If you can’t locate the water main isolation valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that is done, give us a call, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be there rapidly to fix the leak.

While you wait for our emergency plumber to arrive, remove any significant items, mop up any water, and put a container to catch drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
