I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot locate the main isolation valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the diaster from getting worse, give our emergency plumber a call, at any time of the day or night. We’ll be there promptly to solve the problem.

While waiting, remove any important things close to the leak, and mop up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves also.
