I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go immediately to the main valve for your home. If you’re unable to locate a main valve to turn off, then you could try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the leak from getting worse, give our emergency plumber a call, at any hour of the day or night. They’ll be there promptly to resolve the problem.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant things close to the leak, and mop up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
